Cheese safe from bacteria
PA Wellington A strain of bacteria blamed for more than 80 deaths in the United States and Switzerland, and recently found in a cheese factory in Australia, could not be present in New Zealand, a
Health Department official has said. The assistant director of the Public Health division, Mr Jim Fraser, said the bacteria, listeria monocytogones, was. not present in cheese on the New Zealand market because
of strict regulations enforced by the Health Department Cheeses made from raw milk are banned from entering the country and New Zealand producers face the same restriction.
