All-rounder vital to win

Special correspondent

A superb all-round performance by Mark Priest laid the foundations for Canterbury’s 42-run win over a Marlborough XI in a limited over festival cricket match at Horton Park, Blenheim, yesterday.

The left-hander cracked three boundaries in his vital innings of 38 before being run out off the last ball of Canterbury’s allocated 50 overs, leaving his side slightly short at 189 for eight. However, Priest was mainly responsible for restricting the home side’s reply, taking four for 21 from 10 overs of well controlled left-arm orthodox bowling.

And, as if he had not done enough towards Canterbury’s cause, he took an outstanding catch on the mid-wicket boundary to end the Marlborough innings. Max Bremner, Dave Dempsey and Blair Hartland batted attractively, but apart from that, the Canterbury selectors will have had little to smile about

Rod Latham’s chances of playing in the forthcoming Shell Series diminished even further when he was out first ball to the former international, Lance Cairns, who was once of three invitation players in the Marlborough line-up. As well as picking up

three cheap wickets, Cairns, the newly ap-_ pointed Northern Districts Shell Cup captain, struck two mighty blows for six in his 36. Scoreboard: CANTERBURY XI D. A. Dempsey c Harden b Martin 31 B. R.
