Speedway Track records set at Ruapuna

Two track records were set in the sidecar and the three-quarter midget car classes at the Ruapuna Park speedway on. Saturday evening. The former national champions, Wayne Turner and Laurie McMahon, on a Kawasaki looked strong and quickly opened up a lead in the opening sidecar event and went on to set a four-lap record of 72.9 seconds. But Turner and McMahon had to settle for second place in the handicap race behind John Sullivan and Garry Thomson, before storming back to win the feature. The other record was claimed by the threequarter midget driver, Chris Beach, who was unbeaten. . One of the races was stopped when Steve Duff flipped his car several times going into the prison bend after touching another machine. Duff was unhurt but his machine was extensively damaged. Beach led the restart

and bettered his own sixlap record by 1.2 seconds. Dick Webb followed Beach home to claim his third second placing of the night with Phil Melrose taking third place. Kevin Clive won the opening two sprint car races before his vehicle developed an electrical fault which sidelined him for the remaining events. Mike Allan took the lead in these two events and must be a favourite for the South Island championships on Saturday.. Larry Ross maintained his unbeaten record in the solo division. Graeme Fineran was the pick of the midget car drivers and claiimed two wins. Results.—
