Princes Charles condemns dumping rubbish in sea

NZPA-PA London The North Sea has been turned into a big rubbish dump full of effluents that threaten its ecological balance, says the Prince of Wales. “The North Sea is not a bottomless pit for our waste and it makes no sense to test it to destruction,” he told Environment Ministers from all the European nations bordering the North Sea.

Prince Charles was opening the second inter-

national Ministerial conference on the protection of the North Sea — which comes amid mounting condemnation of Britain’s environmental record. Prince Charles said; "We are right to cut the input of dangerous substances, like heavy metals and organic chemicals, into the North Sea, and to develop a system or measuring pollution levels which is common to all. "We do not have a lot of time left in which to

act. Even if we begin today, the damage of the past few years will be with us for some time to come. Knowing how long this stuff lies around, I fear that some of the rubbish tossed overboard from the ship I commanded ten years ago may still be there. "How we decide to use our oceans and waterways in the future is probably one of the most important choices for this generation.”
