Sydenham women upset leader

Sydenham upset the competition leaders, St Albans, with a well judged win on Saturday in the women’s cricket competition. Rlccarton also won, to maintain second-equal place in the points table. At Sydenham Park, on a pitch that was keeping low, St Albans was dismissed for 139. Its best partnership was the third wicket stand at 68 between Ann McKenna and Brigit Legg. Sarah Illingworth also contriubted a hard hitting 27 but the last five St Albans batsmen could only

manage one run between them. Sydenham bowlers were tidy with most of the damage being done by Katherine Ryan who picked up a 5 wicket bag. Chasing 140, Sydenham started slowly with opening bowlers for St Albans Kirsty Bond and Brigit Legg keeping a tight line. At 55 for 4 Sydenham was in trouble but a valuable partnership of 45 between, Trudy Anderson and Andrea Devine lifted the scoring rate and set the side up for a win.

Legg was brought back into the bowling attack and captured Anderson’s wicket but Kay Wickes continued the good batting taking Sydenham through to victory ip the 58th over. The dominant player in the second game was Debbie Ford who was left 98 not out after Riccarton’s 60 overs. Although only 29 runs were scored after 20 overs Riccarton went on to get 164 with Ford playing some well timed cuts and leg glances to secure her top score of the season.

Lancaster Park, weakened by the absence of regular opener Jenny Olson, was dismissed in the 52nd over for 107. The highlight of this innings was the batting of promising sixteen-year-old Sarah Helmore who played a responsible knock of 45. For Rlccarton Karen Gunn had the incredible figures of one for one Off 10 overs, Donna Avery making a worth-while return to senior cricket this season took 4 for 28, while Debbie Ford also had a useful spell at the bowling crease.
