Bowls Burnside increases championship lead

Aided by a little luck and a lot of skill, Burnside II stretched its lead in the National Mutual Three Fours bowls championship on Saturday. Only a point separated Burnside II and secondplaced Papanui I in the Seclon B before the sixth round showdown at the Papanui Bowling Club. Burnside II showed a cool head under pressure to beat Papanui 1, 73-59 (aggregate), and sit on a cushion of five points. Burnside II won two of the three ties to win 6-2, but with an ounce of luck, it could have easily been the other way around. The spectacle lived up to expectations and it is no wonder that these two sides are right up there. Allan Stuart’s team scored the only decisive win, 30-17, at the end after trailing for most of the matchi Barry Jury’s side scored an incredible, 22-20, triumph over John Gill’s team and the only victory for Papanui I came when Brian McGowan’s band accounted for Peter Remi’s group, 22-21. Stuart 30, Dale 17 The skipper, Jack Dale, conceded the matclr on the twentieth end after his opposite, Stuart, triggered a remarkable comeback. At the end of the thirteenth end, Dale, Leon Jones, Trevor Lovegrave and Keith Dunn were in command, 15-9. Bumside II pulled one back on the fourteenth, and then Stuart fired the masterstroke in the round after.

The captain rolled in a shot which shifted the kitty with a perfect slice, to draw six points. That gave Burnside II a 16-15 lead and it never looked back. The visitors rubbed salt in the wound on the seventeenth end to pick up a break of seven points. McGowan 22, Remi 21

This heart-stopping game saw Remi, Bill Cosriff, Alex Paterson and Bruce Amas very much in control at the end of the thirteenth round, leading 17-12. Both teams played steady bowls as the scores tied, 21-21 ail after the twentieth. McGowan, who had had a comparatively lean period, turned hero just when it counted. With the last shot of

the match, the southpaw McGowan caressed in the match-winner. Jury 22, Gill 26 The result of this match was hard to swallow. It was too cruel for Gill’s team of Owan Tomlinson, Pat Doig and Duncan White. Papanui was handsomely placed going into the final round, leading 20-15. But Jury, Lyn Hanger, Len Seear and Alex Grainger had different ideas. The foregone conclusion was not to be, pressure took its toll and the hosts conceded seven points, the biggest break of the match. Gill took some wrong options and his side paid the penalty.
