Two men charged over shirt thefts
A storeman charged with stealing 75 shirts, valued at $2250, from his employer, was remanded without plea for two weeks by Judge Sheehan in the District Court yesterday. Michael Stanley MacDonald, aged 20, is charged with stealing the shirts, the property of Lichfield (N.Z.) Ltd, between September 25 and November 16. Russell James Brown, aged 36, an insurance salesman, was also remanded, without plea, for two weeks on three charges of receiving the 75 shirts. He is alleged to have committed the offences between September 25 and November 9. CIGARETTES A fine of $750 was imposed on a man earlier convicted of receiving 42 cartons of cigarettes, valued at $llB4. The cigarettes were recovered when the police executed a search warrant at the address of Wayne Michael Bertwistle, aged 32, self-em-ployed, on October 20. The defendant told the police he paid $l2 a carton for the cigarettes from a person in a hotel. Counsel, Mr E. Bedo, said as all the property was recovered the matter could be dealt with by way of a substantial fine.
