Elderly tramper missing
Greymouth reporter
Search and rescue teams moved into South Westland yesterday afternoon accompanied by a caravan which will be used as a base to search for a retired Christchurch school-teacher.
John Jackson, aged 68, went into the isolated Cascade-Big Bay area on November 13 and was due out about a week ago. However, he was believed to have altered his itinerary and was not expected until later. Sergeant’ Phil Deazley, the police search and rescue coordinator at Greymouth who moved to Haast yesterday afternoon to direct operations, said that Mr Jackson was known to be well equipped, but had little knowledge of the area. He had intended tramping to the mouth of the Cascade River, south along the coastline to Big Bay returning via the Olivine Range. The last positive sighting was at Big Bay on November 16. A helicopter reconnaissnce night over the area was made by the police yesterday morning without success.
