City tower
Sir, —The conviction held by many that tourists come to Christchurch to admire a few hectares of green sward needs exposing for the self-deception it really is. Tourists are obliged to do it because there is little else to entertain or occupy them on their visit. When they have admired sufficiently they wander about the streets in disconsolate groups, then pack up and move on. Now with Tauranga’s claim for an international airport (and there are plenty of tourist attractions in Tauranga), if Christchurch citizens do not give full support to the tower project in Victoria Square they are presiding at the deathbed of their own city. — Yours, etc.,
W. A. SUTTON. November 26,1987.
