Stamp of parsimony
PA Tauranga Mount Maunganui police have apologised for what they confess is a “ridiculous” cost-cutting move. Neighbourhood watch street support group coordinators last week, received notices advising them of a meeting with the police on December 2 — but at least nine of them also received a demand from NZ Post for 60 cents each to cover extra postage costs. Senior Sergeant Peter Wood said some of the coordinators had complained about having to pay the postage. “The letters went through the system with too few stamps as the envelopes used were larger than standard size,” he said. “All my apologies. It wasn’t an indication of how far the police department is prepared to go in cutting costs. “I know we have to save $3.7 million this year, but this is ridiculous.” Mr Wood said he would have his stamp book with him at next week’s meeting to reimburse the street co-ordinators.
