U.K. speed limit wrangle
Britain’s Association of Chief Police Officers wants the maximum motorway speed limit increased from 112 to 129 km/h (70 to 80 m.p.h.), but the Scretary of State for Transport, Paul Channon, has said he has no intention of raising the maximum legal speed limit.
As soon as Mr Channon expressed his views on the subject, the police made it plain that they are turning a blind eye to motorists travelling up to 16 km/h above the speed limit.
At the same time, they declared their intention to prosecute drivers who exceeded the limit in bad weather or when road conditions were otherwise hazardous.
