Fortex talks continue

Talks between the Fortex Group and the Meat Workers’ Union will continue today in a bid to break the impasse on the introduction of a double shift on the' slaughter board at the company’s Seafield plant

The matter was the subject of a question in Parliament yesterday which prompted the Associate Minister of Finance, Dr Cullen, to assure the House that the Treasury was not scrutinising the performance of the Labour Court. He was answering a question by Mrs Jenny Shipley (Nat., Ashburton) after the Labour Court ruling on the industrial situation at the Fortex meat plant. She asked if the officials were scrutinising the performance of the Labour Court in its handling of cases that related to the meat industry and which concerned improved productivity. Dr Cullen said it was not appropriate for officials to monitor the peformance of a judicial body, but the Labour Court’s decisions were being noted.
