Tough tests for Army gear

PA Wellington The New Zealand Army will test “to destruction if necessary” new helmets and jackets it plans to issue to troops. The Army has called for tenders for the supply of 3000 flak jackets, also known as fragmentataion vests. An Army public relations officer, Major Peter Fry, said that the use of flak jackets in Vietnam had reduced casualties about 20 per cent, and the Israelis in Lebanon had recorded a casualty reduction of more than 30 per cent. The Army is also seeking 10,000 helmets to replace the American-style helmets which have been in use for the last 25 years. Major Fry said that the new helmets would offer greater ballistic protection and cover more of the head and neck. About 15 to 20 per cent of all wounds were to those areas. Tenderers who made the shortlist would be asked to supply six helmets or jackets which the Army would test, to destruction if necessary, during the next year.
