South Africa
Sir,—l applaud R. Osborne’s idealistic aims regarding democracy and anti-racism, but point out that skin colour has nothing to do with racism. So many people regard racism as only applying when a white race is accused of denigrating a coloured race, whereas the term should be used when any race persecutes another, regardless of colour. I suggest, though, that R. Osborne should start with the worst cases, and not Just in Africa. It should also be noted that, In the majority of cases, Moscow-supported communists are involved. One of the best examples would be very welldocumented Ethiopia and, closer to South Africa, Zimbabwe could be quoted — ask the Matabele what they think about racism and persecution. If one looks around the trouble spots in the world, one will find that communists are usually involved, and no better example could be given than their actions in and around South Africa. — Yours, etc., L. R. WILKINSON. November 18, 1987.
