Top golfers head for South Africa
NZPA-AP Johannesburg Four top golfers from the United States and Europe are heading to South Africa for two lucrative events, including a million-dollar winner-take-all tournament, promoters announced yesterday. Bernhard Langer of West Germany, Nick Faldo of Britain, and the Americans, Curtis Strange and Lanny Wadkins, will compete in a
four-man “skins” tournament worth $U5360,000 on November 28-21. The four also will be in the eight-man field for the Million Dollar Challenge starting December 3 at the Sun City resort-and-casino complex. The rest of the field has not been announced, although the South Africans, Mark McNulty and David Frost, are expected to compete. Anti-apartheid activists in South Africa and
abroad oppose visits by foreign golfers, saying these violate the United Nations-sponsored sports boycott imposed to protest apartheid, South Africa’s policy of legalised race separation. The “skins” competition will be played at the Wild Coast resort In Transkei, one of four nominally independent black homelands in South Africa. Under the “skins” tor-
mat, one player must win a hole outright to earn the prizemoney for that hole, otherwise the money Is carried over to the next hole. The foursome will play for SUSIO.MO on each of the first six holes, 1U529.W8 for holes 7-12, and SUS39,M* for each of the final six holes. All four players: competed in the Ryder Cop match earlier this year between top United States and European
players. | Strange, the leading money-winner ' on the United States-pro tour this year, is the only one of the four who has not played before in the Million Dollar , event at Sun City. i, This is the first year that the purse will be awarded ,on a wlnner-take-all basis, although additional prizes of BUSSB.BH will be handed out for the lowest daily rounds.
