Kallista should prove her class today

By

DAVID McCARTHY

The dashing grey mare, Kallista, and her rider, John Dowling, are out to lay a bogey to rest in the Miss Scenicland 9000 at Hokitika today, and her class should take her a long way toward that end in the 1650 m weight-for-age event.

Kallista was the beaten favourite in the race last year in what was her first lengthy trip away from her Ashburton

base. She ran a good second to Nomusa on a soft track but Dowling considers she got too far back in the running which cost her a possible win. He intends riding her handier to the pace this time. Kallist beat only Sterling Exchange and Connie Lawn home at the last outing, the Churchill Stakes at Riccarton, but before that she produced an outstanding effort to beat all but Danseuse Royale over 1200 m at Banks Peninsula after losing valuable early ground. Under handicap conditions she would be giving most in this line-up weight, and plenty of it, so the set scale is another factor in her favour. Nor will she worry about track conditions. The weather was still fine and clear yesterday, with rain possible. The track was on the easy side of firm on the first day and should not be much different today. Lady Blandford will be the rival most will expect to test Kallista. She was running on well at Riccarton and is a useful galloper though not yet in Kallista’s class. Vendee has to switch back from the 3200 m of the New Zealand Cup to today’s measure of Just over half of that but is well and should produce a bold effort. The best of the others could be Goodie Two Shoes which has a good record on the track, especially in softer Jetbet: 6 Hara 1 19 SOUTHLAND HOTEL MAIDEN $3100; 1200 m 1 522 Big Shot 1 C. footing. Decree Nisi appeals in the second leg, the Guenole Memorial.

The versatile Licorice Stick gelding is a fresh runner at the meeting and brings to it a fine record on turning tracks. He was only sixth over 1600 m at Riccarton last start but was still in contention 100 m from the finish. Before that he had run a bold third to Danseuse Royale over 1200 m and before that again he had thrown out a pointer for today’s event by running third in the North Canterbury Cup over 1600 m. Chris Johnson has the ride and Tom Lalor has the brown looking a picture. Cappiemore was put to the test in the middle stages on the first day which took the edge off the free-going gelding when the pressure went on later. Left alone in front this time he will not be easy to get past. He will be ridden today by Anthony Hunsche, thus benefiting from an apprentice allowance. Kaoru Heights stuck well enough in his 1200 m event on Saturday to suggest the extra ground will suit and Star Hope was a shade unlucky on Saturday and if he settles could also offer more than token resistance. For longer odds, Black Arrow could appeal, especially if the rains came. He did not fire over a distance now short of his best on Saturday but looked as if he would improve with the run and he could spring a surprise on soft footing.
