The day in Parliament
PA Wellington Members observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect to the late former National M.P. for Invercargill, Mr Norman Jones, when Parliament resumed at 2 p.m. yesterday.
Mr Jones, who retired from Parliament before the August General Election, died at his home in Invercargill yesterday.
Twenty-six petitions were presented. Mr M. P. McTigue (Nat., Timaru) presented 20 petitions calling for legal status to be given by statute to the unborn child.

Daly and others.
Mr J. A. Banks (Nat., Whangarei) presented a petition on behalf of Susan Elizabeth Leigh-Mackenzie and 544 others calling for retention of Whangarei South Post Office.
Dr A. L. Smith (Nat., Kaipara) presented a petition on behalf of Colleen Wenzlick
and others calling for retention of Snells Beach Post Office, Mr G. E. Lee (Nat., Hauraki) presented a petition on behalf of Robert Lance Webster and others calling for retention of Omokoroa Post Office. Mr R. F. Maxwell (Nat., Taranaki) presented a petition of behalf of L. H. Butler and others calling for retention of Rahotu Post Office. Mr D. L. Kidd (Nat., Marlborough) presented a petition of behalf of Thelma Robinson and 164 others calling for Spring Creek Post Office to be retained. Mr P. A. Burdon (Nat., Fendalton) presented a petition on behalf of Keith Frederick Roper and 890 others calling for retention of Elmwood Post Office. Ministers answered 17 questions. The Taxation Reform Bill, Introduced by the Minister of Revenue, Mr de Cleene, was referred to the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee for consideration.
The Minister of State and Leader of the House, Mr Hunt, then introduced a notice of motion setting out sitting days for 1988. Debate on the Appropriation Bill, interrupted when the House adjourned for dinner at 5.30 p.m., was continued when the House resumed at 7.30 p,m.
The bill was set down for further consideration next sitting day. '? The Minister of Overseas Trade and Marketing, Mr Moore, moved that the Taxation Reforin Bill, which was referred to the Finance and Expenditure Committee for departmental report, ■be simply referred to the committee. ' •
The House rose at 10.30 p.m.
