A Maori challenge is offered by Shane Kahu to the crew of an R.N.Z.A.F. C3l Hercules after landing on the McMurdo Sound ice runway in Antarctica. Mr Kahu is a member of the Ministry of Works and Development party working on the reconstruction of Scott Base. Accepting the challenge is Squadron-Leader Scottie Glendinning. The aircraft, from No. 40 Squadron, based at Whenuapai, made the first R.N.Z.A.F. flight or the summer to Antarctica last week. It carried equipment for the United States and New Zealand scientific programmes. Five Hercules from the squadron will make 14 flights to McMurdo before mid-December. —R.N.Z.A.F. photograph by ALASDAIR GORDON
