Batter in five figures

After notching up an outstanding 19,000 runs for the St Albans senior women’s cricket side last week-end, Ann McKenna is still facing pace balls and sending them packing.

McKenna recorded her milestone with her thirty-eighth run against Riccarton last Saturday and was particularly pleased because her tally is rare even for top male players. “I never really kept

track, but I was quite pleased because apparently not too many men have got that total,” McKenna said. She started playing cricket in 1957. Her highest score is 137 with an average run rate of 40.3. She has bowled 249 maiden overs, taken 234 wickets and has a bowling average of 13.2. McKenna has played seven matches for St Albans this season and

her aggregate run tally now stands at 10,009. Her long-standing opening batting partner, Vicki Burtt who did not play this season because of pregnancy, reminded McKenna of her significant milestone by telephone on Saturday morning. “Vicki rang me to remind me that I only needed 38 runs to reach 10,000. She had her baby on Sunday morning,” McKenna said.
