Rum deal for driver

PA Auckland An Auckland Regional Authority bus driver needed stitches to deep cuts last evening after a passenger smashed a halffull bottle of rum over his head. Authority bus inspectors described the assault on Mr Grant Crosby as one of the worst they had encountered. The inspector in charge, Mr John Young, said Mr Crosby was loading passengers at the New Lynn transpdrt centre about 4.30 p.m. when the incident happened. A male passenger carrying a half-full bottle of rum was asked by Mr Crosby to leave the bottle with him until he completed his journey. Mr Young said the passenger retaliated by smashing the bottle over Mr Crosby’s head. He said that as the driver tried to protect his cut face he was stabbed in the arm with the jagged end of the bottle and also suffered a Cut to the thigh before the offender ran off.
