N.Z. producing ‘nation of fatties’
Political reporter New Zealand is producing a nation of fatties, which belies its sporting reputation, the Minister of Youth Affairs, Mr Goff, has suggested. Speaking in Masterton last evening, Mr Goff praised the benefits that outdoor activities could have for “at-risk” young people. “Despite our reputation as a sporting nation, research suggests that 33 per cent of youngsters are overweight,” he said. About 44 per cent of boys aged between 10 and 14 years, and 60 per cent of girls in this age group did not, play ac-
tlve sport. “Too often, adventure is defined in terms of the latest video release. “Alternatively, the urge for daring and excitement can too readily be translated into misuse of a motor vehicle, resulting too often in tragedy.” Mr Goff called for greater opportunities for young people to experience challenge and adventure in a managedrisk environment. He praised existing Government and private sector programmes which used outdoor experience to build selfconfidence and to stimulate and motivate young unemployed people.”
