Some butchers ‘misled’ by union

Butchers who forced the closing of Canterbury shops, were wrongly advised, said the president of the Canterbury Meat Retailers’ Association, Mr Todd Heller, last evening. About six shops were closed and 25 butcher employees took strike action, he said. “They should return to work immediately/’
Some butchers had been misled by Southern Distribution Workers’ Union officials into believing that all shop assistants were affected by the same award. But the New Zealand Butchers’ award was completely separate. Award negotiations had been held last Wednesday and Thursday and the conciliation council Is expected to reconvene
