Escaped prisoner still at large
PA Wellington There had been no confirmed sightings of a convicted murderer since he escaped from Kaitoke Prison, near Wanganui, on Saturday night, the police said yesterday. While the police were keen to hear from anyone who might have seen the man, they have warned that he could be dangerous and should not be approached. The escapee is Ross Gary Cate, aged 36, also
known as Ross Gary Applegren. He is a European, 184 cm tall (6ft lin), clean-shaven with fair hair and blue eyes. The police said Cate escaped from his cell and cut a hole in the prison’s perimeter fence between 9 p.m. on Saturday and 2.30 a.m. on Sunday. A light plane was called in to help search yesterday but was unsuccessful. The police said Cate was originally from Auckland and could be heading that way.
