Project for students
The Race Relations Office has begun a student teacher exchange programme aimed at promoting greater understanding of cultural differences. It has arranged for 11 second-year students from the Dunedin Teachers’ College to work and live in Auckland for a month. Walter Hirsh, who proposed the scheme, said yesterday he believed cross-cultural understanding was essential for all New Zealanders and especially for teachers. “This is an immersion of an intensive kind and I am thrilled with the way in which the students and participating schools have received the scheme,” he said. His office would evaluate the programme and see what place similar programmes in the future could in teacher training.
