Threat of freight ban

PA Wellington The Federation of Labour said yesterday it would impose a freight and passenger ban on Fiji if an international trade union fact-finding mission was not. allowed to visit the country. A recent meeting of International Free Trade Unions in New Delhi voted to send a mission to Fiji. A meeting early this month between the Fijian Trade Union Council and the Australian Council of Trade Unions endorsed the proposal. A union spokesman said an F.O.L.

executive meeting last week agreed to accept the recommendation that a factfinding mission be sent to Fiji. But if the Fiji regime would not cooperate, the F.O.L. sought an early introduction of freight and passenger bans, which would be imposed by the A.C.T.U. as well as the F.0.L., and supported by the I.F.T.U. No bans are in force at present. They were removed when restrictions against trade unions in Fiji were relaxed, and to assist the organisation of a fact-finding mission.
