Progress

Sir,—Could someone provide an up-to-date definition of the word progress? It seems to have outgrown the dictionary definition of "moving forward." In the neighbourhood where I live we have, in the name of progress, lost an excellent butcher, and a very good greengrocer’s shop. Although it may be progress to have yet another gift shop, It Is not as satisfying as a good lettuce or a lamb chop. And a beauty shop replacing the comer dairy is surely going a bit far? With a large retirement village and hundreds of flats in the area, the real needs of people do not seem to have been considered, and the only obvious moving forward appears to be that of the large cranes and scaffolding of encroaching buildings. It is to be hoped that all the residents are not to be squeezed out and the central city left to die of “progress.” — M. M. G. MATSON. November 12, 1987.
