Leg sheared off
PA Auckland A woman had a leg severed in a freak accident on Auckland’s southern motorway early yesterday, the police said.
The woman and a male companion were standing beside a car they had been towing when a vehicle struck them.
The woman, Judith Mitchell, aged 49, of Mount Albert, had a leg severed below the knee. She was in a serious condition late last evening, said an Auckland Hospital spokesman. Her companion, Berkeley Morton, also aged 49 and from Mount Albert, was in a fair and stable condition in hospital.
The police said both suffered chest, abdominal and leg injuries. A spokesman said that after the accident the driver of the car was in collision ’with another vehicle at an intersection. Nobody was hurt in that incident. The vehicle was found in New North Road and a short time later the driver approached the police. A Grey Lynn man, aged 30, will appear in the District Court at Auckland today charged with failing to stop after an accident, failing to render assistance and careless use of a vehicle causing injury.
