Jones wins NZI croquet
PA Dannevirke The Wellington croquet player, Stephen Jones, won New Zealand’s prestigious NZI President’s First Eight Croquet tournament, two games clear yesterday morning.
The match was the clincher of Jones, who could win outright or draw the tournament with Aucklander Chris Shilling. Under pressure, Jones performed well, making it a comfortable win over Auckland’s Peter Harding, by 26-1. Shilling, his closest rival and competition leader
until yesterday, was taken down 26-9 by Wellington’s Peter Gleeson.
Jones's performance through the tournament has been remarkable, with six triple peels to his credit.
Recognition for his consistent play was achieved yesterday, when he edged Shilling out as competition leader by winning all four games.
Shilling’s downfall came yesterday at the hands of Harding, who played a nine and 12-break game.
His second defeat of the fourth day was against Graeme Roberts, who won
26-10. The former Dannevirke players, Paul Skinley and Gleeson, clubmates in Wellington, both showed improvement during the week.
Skinley, with seven wins in the tournament, can boast a triple peel and two double peels. Results: S. Jones (Wellinton) beat P. Harding (Auckland) 26-1, P. Skinley (Wellington) beat C. Shilling (Auckland), 26-9, P. Gleeson (Wellington), beat A. Heenan (Wellington), 26-21, C. Roberts (Wellington) beat R. Clarke (Waikato) 26-17.
