‘Pioneer washday’
Longjohns, petticoats and work shirts flapped in the wind last evening as several women did the washing 1896 style in the show ring at the Royal Show. The women from the Canterbury Provincial Women’s Division of Federated Farmers were taking part in the anniversary parade. The parade had more than 40 displays spanning 125 years. Although it began about one hour late,
there were plenty of onlookers to watch the “cavalcade of progress.” The women’s “pioneer washday” float contained everything from old wicker washing baskets to kerosine tins for heating the water. Potential horse caravaners had a chance to see a Woodend team in action. The three women (above) and their trainer, Mr Ashley Alloway, plan
to begin a horse caravaning business for tourists and wedding parties at Woodend.
Their gypsy-type caravan, built by Mr Alloway, was complete with clanging pots hanging out the back.
Other items that filled the show ring for the big parade included old police cars and fire engines, women riding sidesaddle, vintage cars, a stage coach, and a mounted troop.
