Crane drivers strike
Cranes on Christchurch building sites will stay quiet until Monday as their drivers strike over the breakdown of the Labourers’ Union award. The drivers, members of the Labourers’ Union, and others associated with the working of the tower cranes struck from 7 a.m. yesterday for 24 hours. The stoppage was called by the union’s
executive as part of national action over the stalling of wage talks on Monday. Mr Barry Brown, the southern branch secretary of the union, said yesterday that about 25 people were involved in the stoppage.
“This is the first phase of national action. The cranes are fundamental to work on multi-storey
buildings,” he said. The next meeting of union members was set for Wednesday morning. Mr Brown said no further action on the crane drivers’ stoppage would take place before the meeting. The talks broke down in Wellington over the union’s claim for a 14 per cent increase and over an industry allowance.
