Post office closing protest rally planned
The chairman of the Canterbury section of the Post Office Union, Mr Phil Yarrall, would like to see Cathedral Square "absolutely packed" for a post office closing protest rally next month. The union Is seeking council permission for the proposed November 20 rally and Is hoping to see it attended by people who will be affected by the closings, as well as post office workers. The union has received
"at least half a dozen" enquiries from Christchurch pensioners seeking Information about petitioning against the , closings after an advertisement was published in "The Press’’ yesterday. Mr Yarrall will Invite the Labour members of Parliament, Mr Jim Anderton and Mrs Margaret Austin, to speak at the rally, as well as the National members of Parliament, Mr Phillip
Burdon or Miss Ruth Richardson. Miss Richardson, who originally supported the closings, has 13 offices in her electorate shutting down and five being turned into agencies, Mr Yarrall said the Labour members of Parliament he had approached were not prepared to speak out publically against party jpollcy, but would "reconsider if that was the feeling of the electorate."
