Tokelaus attached to Wgtn

PA Wellington The Tokelau . Islands will become part of the Wellington Catholic archdiocese from next year after a request by the Vatican. Some 3600 km of the Pacific Ocean will separate this new parish from the 49 other parishes in the archdiocese. The Rev. Patrick O’Connor, of Petone, has been appointed the first parish priest of the three Tok-

elau atolls — Faka’ofo, Nukunonu and Atafu, which are spread over 200 km of ocean and have a population of 1600. The Petone parish has a large Tokelauan population and Father O’Connor spent a number of weeks in Tokelau in 1984. More Tokelauans live in the archdiocese than in Tokelau itself, with five local parishes having established Tokelauan communities.

The Vatican’s Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples asked Cardinal Thomas Williams, Archbishop of Wellington, to accept pastoral care of Tokelau for five years. At the end of 1992 a decision will be made as to whether Tokelau remains' with the - archdiocese or is reunited with the archdiocese of Apla led by Cardinal Pio Taofinu’u.
