Chch police calls

Engagement presents and two irreplaceable cassette tapes were stolen in a burglary of the home of a blind Christchurch organist, Mr Richard Hore, last week.

“Anybody who would steal from a blind man would have to be pretty low,” said Mr Hore, aged 31.

Burglars entered the Fendalton home of Mr Hore and his father on Thursday betwen 6.15 p.m. and 9.30 p.m. Most of the stolen goods were engagement gifts, mainly homemaking items. They included an antique china musical tankard which Mr Hore fears may be irreplaceable. They also stole liquor, and a dual deck portable cassette unit, holding two tapes. One was a message tape from a blind musician friend in the United States. The other was one of five tapes of highlights of his concert career. Mr Hore said he was

hopeful the tapes and tankard would be returned. • Cars in the parking area at Queen Elizabeth II Park have been hit by thieves in the last fortnight.

The police say cars are being entered and property stolen, either by smashing a window or, in many cases, using keys. Other cars and bicycles have been unlawfully taken from the car park.

A New Brighton police spokesman said at least one offence is being reported each day. People are advised not to leave valuables in their car.

• A man stabbed in the thigh in Bishopdale late on Monday evening does not wish the police to pursue the matter.

The man returned to his Primrose Street home at 11.15 a.m. to find a man at the back door. A struggle occurred and the victim was stabbed.

He was taken to Christchurch Hospital by ambulance. The injury was not serious.

• Gold rings worth $5OOO were stolen in a burglary of Quality Junk, in Greers Road, early yesterday. Burglars used an axe to smash through the front window about 4 a.m. and steal the rings which were new.

A beige vehicle cut down to a utility was seen leaving the area.

• Two doors to a storage shed at the Barbadoes Street cemetery were damaged in a deliberately lit fire on Monday.

Kerosene is believed to have been used to fuel the blaze, about 5 p.m. A tin with a small amount of kerosene was found nearby.

A group of punk rockers was seen leaving the area at the time of the blaze.

The Arson Squad is investigating.
