Hospital sends babies north

A full neo-natal unit at Christchurch Women’s Hospital has meant that since last Friday . two babies and two pregnant mothers have had to be flown to other centres.

The medical superintendent of the hospital, Mr Hamish McCrostie, said yesterday, however, that flying babies to other centres was common if the unit was full.

“When the units get busy, you just have to get specialised care any way you can,” he said. “Last year nearly all the babies were coming here from Auckland — lately we have been sending one or two out ourselves.”

Earlier this year, a shortage of trained nursing staff caused problems in the Christchurch neonatal unit but the shortage has been alleviated. A second group of nurses will graduate tomorrow in a special neo-natal certificate of attainment course.

The Canterbury Hospital Board is working on plans for a new unit.
