Challenge awaits police skiers

A New Zealand team of six policemen (above) who will participate la the world ? slice ski championships at rente, Italy In March. Rear, from left, Senior-Ser-geant lan Revell, (Auckland, coach). Constable Paul Cantiwell (Auckland), Constable Earl Robinson (Oamaru), Constable Malcolm Johnsen (Tokeroa), Detective-Ser-geant Peter Mackay (Auckland, manager). Front: Constable Greg Murton (Christchurch), Constable Dick Woerlee (Queenstown), Constable Daniel Harker (Christchurch).

The team has set realistic targets. The skiers do not expect to be able to match the European teams, and, instead, will aim to finish ahead of their Australian and British counterparts. The team of six recently won the New Zealand inter-

services title for the first time. Their aggregate times were four seconds better than the defending champion, Air Force. Temple Basin was the venue for the event. There were slalom and giant

slalom courses. It will be the second time that New Zealand has been represented in the world event The team will have to pay its own way, although It will receive some sponsorship from Fischer, a ski manufacturer. Harker said that, competitively, the group stood little chance against teams such as the Italians and Swiss who spent their winters, on skis patrolling the slopes. The Italian hosts will meet the cost of accommodation, lifts and transport for the visiting teams.
