N.Z. documentary interests U.S.

PA Wellington The United States Public Broadcasting Service has expressed Interest in a National Film Unit documentary about the survival of whales, a unit spokesman said. The recently completed documentary, simply titled “Whales,” contains archival footage of early whaling days in New Zealand and more recent footage of whales in their natural environment. The premiere of the documentary takes place at an international television market in Cannes this week, and the National Film Unit expects it to

sell well. The Film Unit's marketing director, Ms Linda McGregor, said the documentary was produced with the overseas television film market in mind, and the United States interest was heartening. Television New Zealand has bought the film and will screen it in February. The director, Mr Paul Thompson, said the documentary looked at the change in man’s attitude towards whales.

“Last century whalers were heroes, but now they are reviled,” he said. “The message is that we don’t have to kill them.”
