Night shelter celebrates

Past and present workers and visitors at the Christchurch Women’s Night Shelter celebrated its first anniversary yesterday with birthday cake, lemonade, song and dance. About 40 people, including children, attended* the garden party and had a “great time,” according to

one of the workers, Ms Nikki Woolley. The group was told of the house’s progress, and the value of help and gifts, such as blankets and hot water bottles, from the community. A member of the Y.W.C.A. spoke of its involvment in the shelter since it agreed to act as

an umbrella organisation for the home when it opened in September 1986. Several hundred women aged between 16 and 60 years, with problems including relationship breakdowns, psychological distress or disorders, transience, and alcohol and drug dependency, have used the shelter. Five women were staying at the shelter last evening, and Ms Woolley said that four of them took part in the anniver-

sary activities, which culminated with everybody joining in the singing and dancing. Two people from the Polynesian Performing Arts course at the Christchurch Polytechnic also provided entertainment, as did residents of a neighbouring house who turned out with their banjos.
