City tower

Sir,—The use of Victoria Square reading for car paricing distorts what should be open; restful breathing space; essential in the city. The present attempt to use public land in Victoria Square for building a tower would not only lead to making an identikit city of Christchurch imitating other cities in the world and impoverishing the unique qualities of Christchurch, but also allow predatory commercial expansion in what should b$ free, public space. Citizens as well as town planners, city councillors and developers share r& sponsibility. — Yours, etc., D. CRAMPTON. October 15, 1987., \ <■

Sir,—The correspondent who suggested a revolving restaurant on top of the Park Royal Hotel (under construction) has the best idea to satisfy everyone. This would leave us with an uncluttered Victoria Square. If W( A. Sutton travelled the Canterbury Plains he would see trees 10 every imaginable shade of green and animals grazing on fresh green pastures. This season had so much to offer. A pity to see the plains only in the burnt-04 colours of late summer. — Yours; etc., - . V./ * . M. J.--BELL-■ r r •' October 16, 1987 J . *
