British fishermen join Danish anti-chemical protest
NZPA-Reuter Grimsby A group , of British fishermen set sail yesterday to join a Danish fishing fleet’s battle against a chemical-waste ship in the North Sea, a spokesman for the British fishermen said. More than 20 Danish fishing boats on Sunday traded blasts from highpressure water cannons with the Vulcanus II to try to stop it beginning a three-day operation to burn 3000 tonnes of chemical waste from France, Spain, Belgium and Holland. “We can’t let the Danes do this on their own.
They’ve requested our help and we’re giving it,” Jorgen Bojen, captain of one of the four British boats going to the area, told Reuters on Sunday night. Captain Bojen said that like the Danes, the English fishermen were not prompted to protest against the chemical waste-burning by the international environmental group, Greenpeace, which has led a campaign over the last two weeks to . thwart Vulcanus’s operations. “My crew has nearly choked on the fumes given off from the Vul-
canus. The area where the chemical waste is burnt is now completely devoid of fish,” he said. Captain Bojen said he would ask the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations to arrange for other English vessels to take turns tracking the Vulcapus 11. A Greenpeace spokeswoman told Reuters in London that Dutch fishermen also offered on Sunday to join the Danish protest and three German fishing organisations working out of Buesum, Weser and Hamburg supported the action.
Greenpeace says the burning pollutes the sea, endangering marine life and coastal areas. The spokeswoman said she' could not rule .out the possibility that the Greenpeace ship Sirius might take part ■in the protest despite a Dutch court order prohibiting it from doing so. The order came after three Greenpeace protesters from Sirius chained themselves to the funnel and mast of the Vulcanus II to try to stop it leaving the Dutch port of Rotterdam on Friday. ,
