Grants allocated
A total of $217,602 has been distributed to Canterbury organisations by the Christchurch City Council’s grants special committee. Cultural organisations received $32,150, community organisations, $67,100, and sports organisations, $58,300. Among the recipients were the Christchurch Arts Centre which received $32,889 as the second part of a three-year grant for earthquake-strengthening. Summer Times got $10,500 towards its programme, shared between cultural, sporting and community allocations. The committee recommended $2OOO for the community centres’ fund from which centres can obtain low-interest loans. The money for distribution came from the Hillary Commission ($168,200), $11,975 from loans repaid, and $3026 from previous grants not collected. More than 200 organisations sought grants totalling $723,628.
