Library ‘Spycatcher’ popular

While the controversial book, “Spycatcher,” is banned from sale in Christchurch, readers are queueing for the six copies in the Canterbury Public Library. The library has had copies of the book for about six weeks, and more than 30 people are on the waiting list. “Spycatcher” was written by Peter Wright, a member of the British security service from 1955 to 1976. The City Librarian, Mrs Dorothea Brown, said the library had imported the book in response to demand from borrowers. The copies had come through one of the normal suppliers in

the United States, she said. “Spycatcher” had not been banned by the Indecent Publications Tribunal the only authority which affected library buying, Mrs Brown said. The British Government has taken steps to suppress the book in New Zealand, as well as in Australia and Hong Kong. Copies of the book arrived in New Zealandlate last week. The books came Just too late for distribution before a High Court injunction by the British Government stopped London Bookshops importing, selling or distributing the book until October 27.
