Gift to society
Mrs Patricia Watson, vice-president of the Plunket Society, holds the keys to a new Ford Laser car (rear) presented to the Canterbury branch of the society on Saturday by seven local hotels. The hotels, all managed by Hancock and Company, Ltd, were approached some months ago and asked to assist the society with its increased travel costs. Mrs Watson said that the services offered by Plunket were severely
restricted because of the increased costs and staff having to use their own vehicles. 1 Mr Greg Peters, manager of the Oxford Victualling Company, said the hotels decided to collect enough money to buy a car. “A total of SIB,H« was raised by the hotels
thruugh their Lien Foundation (poker) machines and this has been pooled, together to purchase the car ; with the help and assistance of Avon City Ford.** . Avon City Ford . supplied the car at wholesale price and had agreed to service it free, said Mr Peters. The hotels which raised the money were: the Oxford, Hotel Russley, Bush Inn, Waltham Anns Tavern, Caledonian Hotel, Excelsior Hotel, and Bishopdale Tavern.
