Equestrian irony

PA Auckland Captain Mark Phillips, who will hold training clinics throughout New Zealand in the next few months, says he may well be competing in Seoul against some of the New Zealand equestrians he will be training. He arrived in Auckland yesterday on his fifth visit to New Zealand. ' The clinics will concentrate on developing and improving riders’ techniques. “I think even the very best riders need somebody on the ground now and again to point out their bad habits.” He said it was possible that he might compete in Seoul against some of the riders he would coach in this country. Captain Phillips, happy with his showing at the recent European championships in Germany, where he came twelfth, said, “If I can keep horse and rider in one bit between now and next year I stand a reasonable chance of competing.”
