Badminton Frost lifts fourth Masters crown

NZPA-Reuter London The world No. 1, Morten Frost, of Denmark, handicapped by stuffy conditions in London’s Royal Albert Hall, lifted his fourth successive English Masters badminton title yesterday by overcoming the “home” hope, Steve Baddeley, 18-13, 1518, 15-12 in a superb final. Frost finished the match clearly distressed and was given lengthy treatment for suspected dehydration. Baddeley acknowledged that he never had a better chance of beating his training partner and regular adversary. “I could see Morten was not at his sharpest from the start but he still played better on the big points,” he said.

“When he was getting really tired towards the end of the match, he was still making things difficult for me and I was in two minds how to play him.” Baddeley raced 13-8 ahead in the first game but the Dane battled back to win it without dropping another point. Although the English player took the second game, the decider belonged to Frost, even though he was suffering and was warned twice for time wasting between points. Kirsten Larsen completed a Danish double by taking the women’s singles crown with an 114, 11-8 win over a compatriot, Christina Bostofte, aged 16.
