Cure has bright chance to be favourite

Special correspondent Auckland Cure would probably have been favourite for the feature race at the Bay of Plenty Racing Club’s meeting at Tauranga today in any case, but the withdrawal of Starline makes her chances even brighter.

Starline and Cure were equal-fourth on the Free handicap last season. A meeting today, in the Graeme Thomson Diamond, would have been their first since the Oaks in January. However, Kerry Verner a co-trainer of Starline, said yesterday, that it had been decided not to go ahead with a Tauranga start, and all the travelling Involved, but run Starline instead at Ellerslie on Friday. The race planned for her Is a class 2 2000-metres, 400 m shorter than today’s which is open to all four-year-olds.

Cure won twice over 1600 M last season, first in the One Thousand Guineas and then at Pukekohe where she carried 57kg. Last time out, in her second race after a winter spell, she finished third to Silver Rhapsody and Precocious Lad in

the 1600 m Matamata Cup a fortnight ago. At this stage of her preparation Cure should run another smart 1600 m. Rationale should be the toughest for Cure to beat, even though her latest form is a little below par. Three starts back Rationale finished second at Tauranga, and if a trifle disappointing in her next two races, finishing seventh each time, she was meeting stronger opposition than she strikes today. Kyrie Eleison and Spanish Star, second and sixth respectively in a class 3 1600 m at Matamata, appeal most of the others. Dinah’s Card could lead all the way in the Sun Pacific Villas Trophy and complete the T.A.B. double. He is a free-goer which mixes hurdling and flat racing with good results, and a last-start second over jumps, In his fourth race after a winter spell, showed him close to his best The Overseer, Old Pat and Lofty Blomfield are likely to provide him with the most opposition.
