About 50 of the country’s 70 maritime pilots have joined the newly-formed New Zealand Maritime Pilots’ Association. The association was formed at a meeting at Mount Maunganui earlier this month. Captain J. I. Mayson, senior pilot at the Port of Tauranga, was elected president. The deputy harbour master of Timaru, Captain Euan Crawford, was elected vice-president-secre-tary. The association was formed because the pilots felt they lacked a voice at national level to speak for them on matters of a professional or technical nature, said Captain Mayson. It was not a splinter group from the New Zealand Maritime Service Guild, which would continue to represent the pilots in all industrial matters, but complementary to it, said Captain Mayson.
