Amnesty International for publicity drive
Amnesty International will have stalls and sales tables in Christchurch next week, as October 19 to 25 is Amnesty International week. On Thursday, October 22, there will be a stall at Sumner for most of the day, and on Friday, October 23, there will be one in Cathedral Square. A stall will be set up at the Arts Centre Market on both Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25. Amnesty International was founded in 1961 with the aim of "drawing attention to the plight of
countless men and women who have spent years locked away, detained without charge or trial and without any idea whether they will ever be free again,” During the next week Amnesty will focus its attention, and that of the public, on the plight of long-term prisoner of conscience. • ■ One such ..prisoner, is Yusuf Osman Samantar, a lawyer in Somalia. He has been detained without charge or trial for 12 years for refusing to join or support the filling poli-
tical party, says Amnesty. “He is 55 years old and is held in permanent solitary confinement in a maximum-security jail. “Throughout his years in solitary he has not been allowed to see his family or to Correspond with them. He is not allowed anything to read, nor is he allowed to see his lawyer,” . • < He is in ill-health —the left leg is partially para- - lysed, and he has a Hver disease and ulcers. The medical treatment he receives is inadequate, says Amnesty. ~
