Linwood bowls win

John Saundercock (Linwood), with a little help from his club-mate, Ken Watson; won the Lion Brown-Papanui Masters bowls tournament at .the Papanui green at the week-end. ,‘'Z, ' Saundercock . won the tournament with 5U points. It was appropriate that he and his team-mates, Colin Calder, Rod Kimber 1 and Bernie Timms should win the masters* title because they had a combined age of 250. They were the only unbeaten four although they had some tense moments before securing the win. Saundercock and Peter Remi (Burnside) both started the last game with four wins and a half, but Watson beat Remi in the final round to allow his club-mates to take first prize.

Remi entered a play-off with Brian McGowan (Ftepanui) for second and third and eventually had to settle for third.-/ ’■'! ■■ i Saundercock did not; have an easy final match.. He was neck-and-neck with Alan Brydon (Spreydon) for most of the game before pulling away on the final two ends. In his fifth game Sauhdercock was three down playing his last bowl on the final end against Lee Schafer (Redcliffs). The match was all square and Saundercock drew the shot with his,,last bowl for a one point win. There were 32 teams in'the tournament and each played six games over the week-end. Other place-getters were: Brian Barker (Papanui), fourth; Bill Fiecken (Beckenham), fifth; John Gill (Papanui), sixth.
