Canoeing held on swollen river

Wintry conditions faced competitors in the first South Island whitewater canoeing event of the season on the' Buller River last weekend. Sleet and snow fell during the event and the river was in flood as the 23 competitors from Christchurch, Nelson and Wellington battled for the top placlngs. The event was won by Steve Chapman of Nelson with two Christchurch paddlers, Graham Charles and Murray Watson filling the minor placings. Gillian Wratt (Christchurch) was the winner of the women’s event She has recently returned from Europe where she was a member of the New Zealand white water canoe team that competed in a number of regattas.
