Police on march in Christchurch

Crowds gathered and at times applauded as the Christchurch police marched through innercity streets yesterday. The march, which began from the Central Police Staion in Hereford Street at 12.30 p.m., was intended to publicise a public open day at the police station tomorrow. Led by the police dog section, the parade, which also included the Christchurch Police Band and armed offenders squad, moved through the inner city bringing people to shop doorways and upstairs windows.

The march passed through Cathedral Square where the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, and senior police

officers took the salute and then continued north on Colombo Street, into Oxford Terrace, and back to the police station. The open day tomorrow, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is the first for eight years. The public will be able to see nine floors of the station including the cells, police museum, and control room.

Static displays will, be set up throughout the station and a block of Hereford Street will be closed for displays by the Fire Service, ambulance service, and an amateur radio group. Police dogs will give a display and the Christchurch Police Band will play in the station yard.
